The society in which we live is changing rapidly. Many of these changes are for the worse. Depending on who you listen to, you will hear many different ideas as to how to fix our country. Yet we should first consider what the Bible says: “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). The problems that exist in our country – and in every country around the world – are rooted in sin and its consequences. Legislation and government programs cannot fix the problem of sin. God has given the solution in Christ (1 Peter 2:24). As the proverb writer noted, a nation is exalted when its people practice righteousness rather than sin. The standard of righteousness is found in the word of God (Romans 1:16-17); but it is not enough just to know what the standard of righteousness is, we must practice righteousness (1 John 3:7). The apostle Paul said, “But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness” (Romans 6:17-18). If more people would obey the Lord, it would go a long way to fixing our nation. More importantly, these ones would be living in a way that is pleasing to God.
