Too many people are quick to believe everything they hear on television or read on the internet. Following the terrorist attacks in France and the debate over the Syrian refugees, we have likely heard others (and perhaps we have done this ourselves) state their opinion about these events based upon the assumption that the reports they heard were correct. Often, opinions are formed from incomplete or incorrect information. We need to remember the words of Solomon: “The naive believes everything, but the sensible man considers his steps” (Proverbs 14:15). We cannot allow ourselves to live in such fear that it cripples our lives. However, we cannot be so naive that we believe there is no evil in the world of which we should be aware and watchful. Instead, we should be sensible and consider our steps. While we should be aware of the dangers that exist in the world, we should not fear the terrorists. Instead, Jesus said we must fear God (Matthew 10:28). This does not mean we live in terror of God, though we ought to recognize His ultimate power over us. In the Bible, to fear God means we revere Him and respect Him enough to obey Him (Ecclesiastes 12:13). There are many problems and dangers that exist in the world. Despite these troubles, we can have hope in Christ. Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). We can “overcome the world” through “our faith” in Christ (1 John 5:4). Rather than living in fear and believing everything we hear, let us live by faith and clothe ourselves with Christ (Galatians 3:26-27).
