God created us with a sense of curiosity and an innate understanding that there is more to our existence than just what is immediately apparent. He has “set eternity in [our] heart” (Ecclesiastes 3:11). Solomon said, “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter” (Proverbs 25:2). We are curious about this life – particularly about what will happen in our future. While there are many things about the future that are uncertain and unpredictable, there are certain things that we can know from what God has revealed to us in His word. The Scriptures reveal two future events that are common for all of us:
  1. Death – “For there is no lasting remembrance of the wise man as with the fool, inasmuch as in the coming days all will be forgotten. And how the wise man and the fool alike die” (Ecclesiastes 2:16). There are many advantages in life that those who are wise have over those who are foolish; but when it comes to death, they are equals. The Hebrew writer said, “It is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).
  2. The end of the world – “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up” (2 Peter 3:10). The world in which we live had a beginning (Genesis 1:1) and it will have an end.
There are naturally questions that people have about these future events. What will happen after death? What will happen at the end of the world? When will these events occur? The purpose of this study is to examine what the Bible teaches about heaven, hell, and the end times. It is important that we understand these things so that we can prepare ourselves and also help others prepare for the only events in our future that are certain.
